will post the 64-bit version very soon, you can simply run "sudo make" inside a virtual machine to make it to boot from a vhd/vmdk/vdi file.

These are the steps:

(1) create a vm from vmlite or virtualbox, make sure you use all default setting for harddisk, i.e., only one primary partition plus some swap partition.

(2) boot the vm, then inside the vm, unzip the zip file to a folder, and run this command:

sudo make

(3) install vboot loader, then create a boot entry:

menuentry "VHD Ubuntu 12.04, Linux 3.2.0-23-generic" {
vhd vhd0 (hd1,1)/vms/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.vdi --partitions
linux (vhd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic root=/dev/sdb1 vloop=/vms/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.vdi vlooppart=p1 quiet splash
initrd (vhd0,1)/boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-23-generic
}

pls change the path, note that the .vhd in above sample is placed in an external drive.

It works great. Tested on elementary OS Luna Beta1 and GRUB4DOS as bootloader.

title Elementary OS z VHD
kernel /grub/elementary/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic root=/dev/sda5 vloop=/VPC/ElementaryOS/ElementaryOS.vhd vlooppart=p1 quiet splash
initrd /grub/elementary/initrd.img-3.2.0-23-generic
