TOPIC: Help with snapshots or immutable disks

Hi,

I have some sort of the same problem, when i create any windows version vhd using snapshots work fine (altough i don't like that it starts the vhd when i add or remove a snapshot) funny thing is that revert snapshot is actually a remove and not a revert.

However when i try to make snapshots of the ubuntu 10.04 example i downloaded it makes nog suggestion for a file name (as it does with the windows vhd's) and when i enter a name it responds cannot find the vhd file?

I have a few suggestions to the developers:

1 when managing the snapshots please do not start the VHD, managing and starting are 2 different tasks please seperate them.

2 removing and reverting a snapshot are 2 different things please make both options. Remove should as the current implementation does remove the snapshot VHD and the entry in the menu. Reverting should empty (or delete and recreate as this does the same thing) the VHD and not remove the snapshot entry from the menu.

3 If you add hints at the bottom of the menu that is fine but make sure the autostart timer line is not overwriting this menu place it on another line.

I like this product but it still needs improvements to make it more NOOB friendly.

snapshots on Linux is not working yet, we are releasing a new version soon that supports snapshot for Linux.

1, we do that for a reason, the boot loader does not support writes at the moment, so we have to defer the real work to the kernel after booting. Once we support writes at boot stage, we will do that. We will also provide a GUI tool for you to use inside Windows.

2, again, you will be able to use the GUI tool to do those things, including merging (which is not supported right now). We call that "revert" from users feedback, we we think this is more often the case. We could add another entry as you described, revert without deleting the menu entry.

3, fixed this, available next update. Someone else mentioned this bug too.

For the answer in point2 I hoped that managing would be possible in the bootmenu because when it is a windows GUI tool i will need 2 have at least 1 windows installation to run it on. And when frequently need to revert (for demo/development machines) i would need to start my managing windows machine everytime. I think this is a time consuming way to manage snapshots.

I hope you rethink the option to put all managing tasks in a windows app because for a bootmenu this makes no sense as for every managing task you need to fire up the Windows machine with your GUI. For virtual machine environments i understand because there is a host and a client OS. For many managing tasks you need to stop and start the client OS. But the host with the management GUI is always up and running so changes can be made instant.

Hope my suggestion makes sense.
